The Douche
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is a anime that how really caught my interest. I did not watch the first episode when it was released last week but I did catch up today. The anime is about a boy/young man, cannot really tell, who is from a space. He is a soldier who is fighting these weird space snail, butterflies, bugs. Humanity do not have a home to go to so they made a space home called Avalon. When fighting the creatures to boy, named Ledo, is overrun and is forced to retreat back through a wormhole.  But he gets attacked while in it and lands on a foreign planet who's natives speak a language he does not understand. Turns out it is earth he is on. Episode 1 was a good introduction episode. Set up some nice characters and displayed some nice art design. My only gripe about the show is the main character who is too angstty for me. It is a typical Gundam Seed character. You know the whole boy solder who is all great and all but has trouble in society and tries to be distant but ends up looking douchebagy.

All the other character seem cool and funny. The robot, who is in an AI in the mech, is actually a nice character. Feels very personal and not a typical robot who is emotionless. The main girl is the typical spunky girl with a pet. Caring, cute, and funny. I usually find it a real drag when this girl appears and hope that the main romance does not involve her, but rather the more mature, older, counterpart of her. She is in her too (the older, busty version of her that is). But this character does not feel like a drag. Maybe it is because she and the main character do not speak the same language. But she is rather delightful. Episode 2 is the the whole revelation that people are fingering out what he is and what he can do. At the end of the episode he destroys a pirate fleet and people are in awe. Then it ends. So episode three will be the aftermath and what the people think and introduce the enemy.

What really sets this anime apart from the rest is the setting. It's pretty much Waterworld. For those who have not seen it, it is about the whole earth being underwater and people are living on the ocean. They discover the cities that used to be and salvage what they can. Oh and there are pirates like the one is the anime.  The anime has high potential but also has the flop tag because of the two main characters. I would put this above Valvrave, just because it held my interest longer. But the second episode of Valvrave has yet to come out so we shall see how that goes. For now 8.5/10 is a good score here. Plenty of cool things only one real negative which is the main hero. But can change an open up.
